Called the “City of Festivals,” Indio prides itself as the host to a diverse collection of celebrations. Starting in late fall, the Indio Powwow, which features Native American drums, dancing, singing, as well as traditional foods, reflects the cultural heritage important in the city’s formation.
Other major winter festivals include the judged and juried Southwest Arts Festival, the Tamale Festival, and the National Date Festival (which hosts, among other delightful diversions, nightly camel and ostrich races), and the International Salsa Festival in spring. Equestrian enthusiasts will not want to miss the Indio Desert Circuit Horse Show, which runs six weeks in January and has over a million in prize money including a $150, 000 grand-prize purse.
If you happen to find yourself in Indio between fests, however, fear not. There is a host of other diversions typical to the area, including ballooning, golfing, hiking in nearby Joshua Tree, shopping, casino-hopping, or simply spending the day lazing by the pool.
